Specialty Classes
All classes at The Energy Clinic are based around the concept of Functional Fitness Training (FFT). FFT is used to prepare the non athletic participant for both known and unknown conditions that can possibly be difficult, adverse or even hostile. (Think of carrying groceries up a flight of stairs in the rain while fumbling for keys, add cats, dogs and kids for hostile)
We believe quite strongly that the current model of fitness conditioning and training that has been popularised within gym environments over the last 15-20 years, to be woefully inadequate in its roll to prepare its participants for real life situations. Come try our specialised mix of classes and discover for yourself why they are so popular and how they achieve some truly remarkable results.
Kettle bells
If you have spent even a small amount of time in a gym in the last 10 years then you would certainly have heard of the term 'Functional Fitness Training'. Part of the reason for this new fitness paradigm was the booming popularity of Kettle bell training in America. Lead by some the the world't best trainers and coaches, Kettle bell training is now one of the most progressive forms of fitness conditioning available anywhere in the world.
The Kettle bell or girya (Russian), is a cast iron weight looking somewhat like a cannonball with a handle, which is used to perform ballistic exercises that combine cardiovascular, strength and flexibility training. Unlike traditional dumbbells, the center of mass is extended beyond the hand which allows for a wide variety of ballistic and swinging movements. By their nature, exercises build strength and endurance, particularly in the lower back, legs, and shoulders and can, with practice create a wonderful vehicle for cardiovascular training.
The basic movements, such as the swing, snatch, and the clean & jerk, engage the entire body at once, in a way that mimics real world activities such as shoveling, farm work or looking after a brood of children ;o)
At The Energy Clinic, Kettle bells are a very popular tool (especially at Ladies Boot Camp) for enhancing fitness results such as fat burning, strength development or just simple conditioning and toning.
Power Bands
Resistant Band or Power Band Training has been around now for some years now but is still very much an underused fitness resource. Not to be confused with thera-bands, Power Bands are used to further enhance many ‘Functional Fitness’ activities, from strength and power training, to improving gait mechanics, flexibility, core function, balance, timing, agility and speed.
One of the most significant differences between resistance bands and free weights is the resistance curve. A weight will feel heaviest at the beginning of the lift and easiest at the end range, while with band training the reverse is true, offering a very unique training stimulus to the participant.
Great for all fitness levels, bands can be used to develop positive movement patterns in the beginner client or athlete, as well as provide significant resistance to knock the sails out of even the most hardened athletic performer.
Yoga
Yoga simply makes you feel better. By practising the postures, poses, breathing exercises and meditation, you give your body the means by which to make you healthier in body, mind and spirit. Yoga lets you tune in, chill out and shape up -- all at the same time.
For beginners, yoga is good for aiding in the recovery of diseases or ailments. Research shows that yoga helps manage or control anxiety, arthritis, asthma, back pain, blood pressure, carpal tunnel syndrome, chronic fatigue, depression, diabetes, epilepsy, headaches, heart disease, multiple sclerosis, stress and other conditions and diseases. A few of the well known benefits of yoga are listed below.
- Improves muscle tone, flexibility, strength and stamina
- Reduces stress and tension
- Boosts self esteem
- Improves concentration and creativity
- Lowers body fat
- Improves blood circulation
- Stimulates the immune system

Olympic Lifting
Olympic lifting is the number 1 lifting method used at The Energy Clinic. From your Dead Lift, to Cleans, Overhead Pressing and Snatching, Olympic lifting is the meat and potatoes of strength development. Ideal for anyone who wants to improve their strength, timing and balance, this style of lifting is especially great for woman as it isn't designed to add bulk or size.
Body Weight Training
Body weight training covers the essentials of just about all movement patterns and positions and is essential for progression in EVERY other style of training. The sad reality, is that body weight is all too often a much underutilised and overlooked method of conditioning. Body weight control stems from being able to co-ordinate your muscles and stabilise your joints through differing ranges and movement patterns.
The overall goal of this 5 week block, is to teach participants to better understand their own physical strengths and weaknesses and then discover how to improve attributes that may have been forgot or overlooked. This class is a must for people who feel they have plateaued with their training or feel they'd like to improve their balance, timing, co-ordination and basic movement mechanics.
Expect to be put through a range of calisthenic exercises which will derived from drills seen in boxing, gymnastics, track and field, weight-lifting and more.
Interval Training
Interval Training covers a range of different timed routines that are designed to get your metabolism soaring into high gear. Although this block of sessions will improve certain attributes, such as; strength, agility and control, it's prime function is to get you burning body fat... and lot's of it.

Testimonial
I have really enjoyed the Kettle Bell Workshop I completed recently. I enjoy variety with exercise or I become bored and lose interest.
The KB workshop was different in that it was more a ‘thinking person’s ‘ workshop. The focus was on one movement pattern and breaking that down into all its components and working on each part to try to perfect the complete movement pattern.Working on each part separately showed me the importance of basic movement patterns and how they contribute to a complete movement, and how important it is to get each one right. It challenged my brain by requiring me to really concentrate on everything I was doing and how it all fits together. It was challenging and rewarding to see the progress over the 5 weeks.
Duncan has an amazing amount of knowledge and an ability to share this with other people in a way that stimulates interest and fosters skill development. I would certainly be interested in further workshops to challenge me in different ways.
